September is all things Baobab. We will be gigging at the very hip The Piano Bar with a set of sultry latin and dressy (or undressed?) classical music. Then we will take our first Baobab tour through the Sunshine Coast. I am so thrilled to be playing with Olga Leonard (piano) and Babette Viljoen (accordion). These ladies are super talented and really show off how much talent we have in South Africa! I hope to see a few of you at some of the gigs.
I was lucky enough to get invited to be part of a CD launch happening this Saturday evening, 1 August, at Octopus Garden.
I am really enjoying playing the original music by Martinique du Toit. Each song is unique and the music is very intimate. She shares a part of herself with you in each song. You can check out C’est La Vie by clicking on the title. The band is made up of Martinique du Toit, Jay Latter, Pieter-Adriaan Stofberg and myself. There will be two other concerts of Matinino on the 8th and 11th of August.
If you want to hear more of her go to her website http://matinino.co.za/ and check her out. See you there Saturday!
So we have our second MyCMC concert happening this week. It will be awesome to have Babette and Olga join us for some jazz and classical music. If you are in the southern suburbs area come check them out at Claremont Methodist church at 6:30pm on Wednesday 22 July. Entry is free and you can get tea/coffee for a donation.
We have some gigs coming up next week. Here is a link to see some of the tracks we will be doing. There are stories about an elephant and her calf, a Canadian folklore demon, a dedication to the Italian job and more!
This winter holiday starts with two exciting projects I get to be involved in – woohoo!
I am really looking forward to joining the South African National Youth Orchestra Foundation as a tutor. We meet in Potch to brave the cold and play music all day (and night). I am especially excited to see Thami James and meet Darryn Prinsloo – two young euphonists who are passionate about playing their instruments. I get to see old friends again, as Bjorn Breistein will be coming to conduct the wind band and Mark Hampson and Yvonne-marie Brand will be tutoring the brass too. Thanks to Sophia Welz for getting us all together for a kiff course!
In other news, we will be sending out more info as the dates approaches, but Proboscis will be around in July for only 5 gigs. Liane Halton leaves us for new adventures in China and, as much as we hope she will come back soon, we also hope that she has a mind blowing, crazy, fun, eating-lots-of-food, making new friends kind of adventure. BUT SHE IS NOT GONE YET. Phax and Seed join to collaborate – you can check out our sound here…https://soundcloud.com/proboscis-3
It is all originals works by myself, Liane Halton and Shaun Acker. Jay Latter (drums) and Kyle Dijkstra (bass) are the kick ass rhythm section.
It is so exciting to be collaborating with these fine musicians! We will be announcing gig dates soon but you can check us out at places like Alexander Bar and Tagores. Stay tuned (to b flat!) for more info.
Abigail Petersen will be the voice who starts the My Claremont Music Collective at Claremont Methodist Church this month. You can come check her out on the 24 June at 6:30pm. Otherwise, you can just join us for some tea and coffee (for a donation) and some excellent live music.
This year’s line up includes super stars like Olga Leonard, Babette Viljoen, Sammy van Gysen and Wesley Hlava. We will also have a student night where we will invite local schools to produce their best in different instrument groups. Spread the word – We hope to see you there!
