Performance

Andrea Hobson is a brass performer, music educator and composer. She was a finalist in the Lubner music competition and was awarded the Lubner MAID music scholarship to study music. She studied at Rhodes University and the University of the Free State, under Prof David Scarr and Dr Paul Loeb van Zuilenberg. She graduated in 2010 with a Masters Degree in music majoring in Euphonium performance, Brass pedagogy and Composition.

In her youth, she auditioned and was seated principal euphonium in the South African Youth Wind Orchestra and principal trombone in the South African Youth Orchestra who worked with Osmo Vänskä, Ewa Strusinska and Sir Roger Norrington. Before moving to Germany, she freelanced and performed as a euphonium and trombone soloist and orchestral musician with the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic and Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Internationally, Andrea has held positions with the Bern Youth Orchestra in Switzerland on principal Trombone and attended the International Euphonium Tuba Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, in June 2014 where she received classes. Andrea was accepted to attend the International Music Festival in Pelotas, Brazil in January 2015, as well as being awarded the Earl L. Louder award to attend the 2018 International Euphonium Tuba Festival, USA. She has toured successfully as soloist to Singapore and Spain. 

She is based in Thüringen and freelances regularly with local orchestras, brass bands and wind bands including the Sächsiche Bläserphilharmonie, Thüringer Symphoniker Orchestra, the Police Orchestra Thüringia and within the Brass and wind band scene in Germany. In 2026 she won the euphonium/baritone position with the Police Orchestra Thüringia. She also gives solo recitals and is involved in brass ensemble performances locally and within the province.
